Lake Kerkini 2020
In January and early February trips are planned to Lake Kerkini in Northern Greece to photograph the Dalmatian Pelicans. Lake Kerkini is one of the only areas where Dalmatian Pelicans can be found and their numbers are increasing, tourism is helping to protect these magnificent birds, the local population are protecting the birds their income is increasing by providing boat trips and accommodation.
We will meet at Thessaloniki airport and travel the 60 miles to the area of Lake Kerkini where we will settle into our accommodation.
The next three days we will have 6 hours on the boat some of this time we will photograph on the shoreline to get the closeup shots. We will be up bright and early to catch the first light for 2 hours then we will have a break for late breakfast and then 2 hours between 9 and 11 back on the boat, then we will catch the golden hour back on the boat, this will give us the best possibility of getting the best views and images of the birds and allow us to warm up between trips. Lake Kerkini can be very cold this time of year, so plenty of warm layers of good quality outdoor clothing is a must, this included boots, hats and gloves.
This trip will cost £999 and will cover the transportation to and from Thessaloniki airport and around Lake Kerkini, all accommodation costs and bed breakfast and evening meals, along with the three days with our private boat, any alcoholic beverages are not included. This will be a small group trip with a maximum of 4 people including me.
Dates available January 21st- 25th 2019 and January 28th to 1st February.
Equipment & Clothing
The most important thing is to have a good set of outdoor clothes and shoes. These should include layers so if you get hot or cold these can be adjusted easily. Good waterproof/breathable coat and trousers and comfortable gortex shoes or boots. A thin waterproof mat to lay on is also very useful and can be folded to create a kneeing pad.
My photography equipment consists of: 2x Canon 1DX II, Canon 1x 7D II, and Canon 5D III bodies. I have an assortment of Lenses which includes Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS II US. Canon EF 400mm f 5.6 L. Sigma 100-600mm 5-6.3 DG C. Plus Canon EF 500mm f/4 L IS II USM. EF 1.4 III Extender and EF 2x Extender III.
All have their place but I find the Canon EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 L IS II paired with either the Canon 1DX II or the 7D II is a very good combination.
I can arrange camera hire for you. Please ask for details.
